Dr Evan Harris MP speaking to a rally against NHS cuts
According to the acting Chief Executive of Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust, there could be £240 million of cuts to the county's health budget over the next four years. Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, Dr Evan Harris, has launched a petition against the cuts, supported by Lib Dem constituency parties across Oxfordshire.
Dr Harris, who was an NHS doctor working locally before being elected an MP in 1997, said: "Cuts on this scale could be devastating to front line services, Everyone knows that the public finances are in a poor state, but the government should be protecting front line services."
Wantage and Didcot Lib Dem spokesman Alan Armitage added: "This could set back all kinds of programmes which are designed to prevent health problems developing in the first place. It is also likely to result in a loss of jobs in the county, which would badly effect the health and prospects of many people, particularly younger ones. Cuts on this scale will prove to be a false economy."
